About the Ibizan Hound

Origins and History

The Ibizan Hound (Euskal Herriko Txakurra) originated on the island of Ibiza (Eivissa) in the Balearic archipelago. Early references date to the 16th century, when Spanish sailors noted a slender, long‑legged hound used for rabbit and hare hunting. The breed was refined in the 19th century by local hunters who prized speed, endurance, and keen sight. In the early 1900s the Ibizan Hound was introduced to mainland Spain and later to the United Kingdom and United States, where it gained recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1966 and the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1979.

General Characteristics

  • Elegant, sighthound build with long, fine legs and a deep chest.
  • Alert, inquisitive temperament; highly active and independent.
  • Originally bred for coursing game; today excels in agility, lure coursing, and conformation showing.

Breed Standards

Physical Specifications

  • Height: Males 24‑27 inches (61‑69 cm); Females 22‑25 inches (56‑64 cm).
  • Weight: Males 55‑65 lbs (25‑30 kg); Females 45‑55 lbs (20‑25 kg). Proportionate to height with a deep, well‑muscled chest.

Coat and Color

  • Coat: Short, smooth and glossy; a wire‑haired variant is also accepted.
  • Texture: Fine, close‑lying hair that lies flat to the body.
  • Accepted colors (per FCI and AKC):
    • Red
    • White
    • Red and white (predominantly red with white markings)
    • Tricolor (white, red, and tan)
    • Other shades such as fawn may be accepted in some registries, but pure red, white, or red‑and‑white are the standard.

Training & Behavior

Temperament Considerations

Ibizan Hounds are intelligent and highly motivated by sight and scent. Their independent streak can make them appear aloof, especially with unfamiliar people. Early socialization is essential to prevent shyness or over‑exuberance around strangers.

Training Essentials

  • Socialization: Introduce to a variety of people, animals, and environments between 8‑16 weeks.
  • Exercise needs: Minimum 1‑2 hours of vigorous activity daily (running, lure coursing, agility).
  • Common training challenges: Tendency to become distracted by small animals; may require a firm but positive reinforcement approach.
  • Positive reinforcement and clicker training work well; avoid harsh corrections which can damage the breed’s confidence.

Show Preparation & Grooming

Daily Grooming

  • Brushing: Light brushing 1‑2 times per week with a soft bristle brush to remove loose hair.
  • Bathing: Bathe as needed; over‑bathing can strip natural oils.
  • Nail and dental care: Trim nails every 3‑4 weeks; brush teeth several times a week or provide dental chews.

Show Preparation

  • Pre‑show grooming timeline: Bathe 24‑48 hours before the ring, followed by a light brush to enhance coat sheen.
  • Ring presentation tips: Maintain a sleek, well‑conditioned appearance; ensure ears are clean and free of debris; display the breed’s characteristic “high‑set” tail carried in a gentle curve.

Health & Care

Common Health Issues

  • Hip dysplasia – recommended orthopedic screening by age 2.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) – DNA testing recommended for breeding stock.
  • Epilepsy – monitor for seizure activity; veterinary evaluation if observed.
  • Hypothyroidism – routine blood work can detect early onset.
  • Sensitivity to certain anesthetics – inform veterinary team of breed.

General Care

  • Exercise requirements: High‑energy; needs daily vigorous exercise and mental stimulation.
  • Nutritional needs: Balanced diet appropriate for activity level; maintain lean body condition to protect joints.
  • Lifespan considerations: Average 12‑14 years; regular veterinary check‑ups and preventive care extend longevity.
