About the Australian Terrier

Origins and History

The Australian Terrier originated in the early 19th century in New South Wales, Australia. Bred from rough‑coated terriers brought by British settlers—such as the Jack Russell Terrier, Scottish Terrier, and English White Terrier—its purpose was to hunt vermin on farms and in orchards. The breed was officially recognised by the Australian National Kennel Club in 1938 and by the American Kennel Club in 1994.

General Characteristics

  • Compact, sturdy build with a square profile.
  • Alert, confident, and spirited temperament.
  • Originally a working terrier for rodent control; today a companion and show dog.

Breed Standards

Physical Specifications

  • Height: 10‑11 inches (25‑28 cm) at the withers for both males and females.
  • Weight: 12‑14 pounds (5‑6 kg).

Coat and Color

  • Harsh, wiry outer coat with a soft, dense undercoat; length ¼‑½ inch, hand‑stripped for show.
  • Accepted colors: solid red, wheaten, or blue & tan (blue‑gray with tan points).

Training & Behavior

Temperament Considerations

Australian Terriers are energetic, intelligent, and sometimes independent. Their strong prey drive and confidence can lead to boldness with unfamiliar dogs, so early socialisation is essential.

Training Essentials

  • Begin socialisation with a wide range of people, sounds, and environments before 12 weeks.
  • Provide at least 30‑45 minutes of daily exercise—walks, play, and mental enrichment.
  • Use positive‑reinforcement methods; the breed responds well to praise and treats but may be stubborn with harsh corrections.

Show Preparation & Grooming

Daily Grooming

  • Brush the coat 2‑3 times per week with a stiff‑bristle brush or grooming rake to remove loose hair.
  • Hand‑strip or clip the coat every 6‑8 weeks to maintain the required wiry texture for the show ring.
  • Bathe only as needed; over‑bathing can soften the coat.
  • Trim nails regularly and brush teeth several times a week.

Show Preparation

  • Begin hand‑stripping 2‑3 weeks before the show to achieve a uniform, harsh surface.
  • Trim the ears to the standard length, clean the ear canal, and pluck excess hair from the face.
  • Polish the feet and ensure the tail is carried high and straight.

Health & Care

Common Health Issues

  • Patellar luxation (especially grade I‑II).
  • Hip dysplasia—screening recommended for breeding stock.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataracts.
  • Allergic skin disease and hypothyroidism.

General Care

  • Moderate daily exercise to maintain a healthy weight and joint health.
  • High‑quality protein‑rich diet appropriate for a small, active breed; avoid over‑feeding.
  • Average lifespan 12‑15 years; regular veterinary check‑ups and preventive care extend longevity.

Note: Health and care information reflects breed tendencies and may not apply to every individual; consult a veterinarian for personalized advice.
